Your Energy Rating

The EnerGuide label shows the amount of energy your home uses each year. The label will also show how your current rating compares to your home if it were built using today’s building codes and standards.

You will receive a printed label that you can display somewhere inside your house (inside your electrical panel is often a good place for it).

The EnerGuide label uses standard operating conditions (that is two adults and one child at home 50% of the time), rather than your actual household operating conditions so the actual amount of energy consumed will not exactly match the amount on your report. Also, atypical energy loads (such as hot tubs, saunas or aquariums) are not factored into your EnerGuide label.

Three important numbers are provided within your label:

  • Your overall energy consumption – this is the amount of energy your house consumes under the standard operating conditions
  • Rated energy intensity – this is the energy consumed per square meter (indoor areas only
  • Rated greenhouse gas emissions – this number show you how much greenhouse gas emissions are released (directly or indirectly) by your house. Because your EnerGuide rating uses standard operating conditions, this might not tally exact with the actual emissions (it will typically be lower).
